Waste material wall cassette prototypes, Oxford Brookes University, 2023
This is the second phase of a project to design and build wall cassettes for a demountable modular building made from ultra-locally sourced waste material. The building will provide a sheltered space on campus to assemble large objects, models and structures. The aim of the project is to teach students Circular Design principles as well as to embed principles of ethics, professional skills, safety and sustainability in their developing design process.
In this phase, students built 24 external insulated rainscreen-clad cassettes and four insulated internal finish cassettes. The focus for this iteration of the project was the reduction and repurposing of waste material generated by the construction industry. We were fortunate to be able to collaborate with Willmott Dixon Construction who are working on a construction project on campus and generously donated waste material for incorporation into the wall cassettes. Construction waste included metal trims, rainwater pipes, composite boards, tiles and excess timber. Passports were produced for each wall cassette listing the material provenance, assembly and disassembly instructions. The cassettes were installed in the Glass Tank Gallery at Oxford Brookes University from October to November 2023.
